Stephanie Fortunato is the Director of Providence's Department of Art, Culture + Tourism. Stephanie collaborates with communities to develop and implement cultural plans, policies, and partnerships that make art, culture and heritage accessible and engaging, strengthen neighborhoods, build cultural equity, and promote asset-based arts revitalization. Stephanie plays a key role in producing PVDFest, oversees the Department’s programs, creative placemaking portfolio, public art and space policy, creative sector research and promotions, among other things. In her previous roles with the city, Stephanie was responsible for managing the City’s first cultural planning process, leading the cultural planning team on a major transit corridor study, assisting management of large-scale arts festivals and Providence 375th anniversary celebration. Previously, Ms. Fortunato was director of programs for The Pawtucket Foundation, a civic organization that aims to catalyze area prosperity, and consultant for Jane Clark Chermayeff Associates LLC, a museum-consulting firm specializing in family programming. Ms. Fortunato began her career on Long Island working for the Huntington Arts Council and as curator of a local history museum. She is on the Board of WaterFire, the Providence-Warwick Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, and on the Advisory Committees for the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy and the Providence Cultural Equity Initiative. She received her M.A. in public humanities from Brown University and a B.A. from Providence College.
