Member Profile

Grimshaw is recognized for its reputation of design excellence by its peers, the press, and, most importantly, the public who use its buildings day in and day out. The firm is frequently cited as one of the top international architecture practices, its portfolio of work heralded with over 200 awards, its legacy of innovation taught in case studies at architecture schools around the world, and its buildings voted ‘best’ or ‘favorite’ repeatedly by the public.

Since our foundation in London nearly forty years ago, Grimshaw has expanded to a network of global studios informed and empowered by the precise local knowledge and worldly expertise that our staff bring to bear. Our network of studios supports one another in all facets, particularly when it comes to knowledge sharing and opportunities to enrich and innovate in our expansive portfolio of work.

Our reputation is built on bespoke, carefully crafted design solutions across a range of typologies. Our work is characterized not by the imposition of a rigid house style, but instead by structural legibility, innovation and a rigorous approach to detailing. Our buildings are designed to have spatial and organizational clarity, to reflect the activities within them, yet to be flexible enough to respond to changing needs.

Our Arts and Culture group works across the arts spectrum. Completed and current projects include museums and galleries, research and academic buildings, performing arts venues, specialist archives, master plans, programming surveys and more. We are committed to providing architecture and planning of the highest caliber, resolving both the ambitions of the client and the complexities of the site into architecture that is intimately connected to context and function.

Our inventive designs sensitively reflect a region’s geography and culture while providing provocative civic spaces to encourage interaction and debate. The protection, preservation and presentation of art and culture, whatever its format, requires a series of specialized conditions and controlled environments. Our proven track record provides valuable experience in developing the potential of new projects and understanding how these spaces might relate to and inform education within this field.

Grimshaw is a place of ideas and invention, driven by a desire to connect people to each other and the world around us. Our best projects are fit to purpose, reflections of their users and communities, created by our own global community of brilliant architects, designers and thinkers. We recognize the urgency of the challenges that face our planet, and our duty to deliver architecture and design best suited for a flourishing future.

Reason for joining GCDN

Vincent Chang has consistently driven efforts at the practice to engage in the project typologies that lie at the heart of the Global Cultural District Network’s focus on engaging people with culture. More and more of our work involves complex placemaking and public realm considerations. This makes us both teacher and student, able to share what we have learned thus far and eager to learn more from a globally recognized peer group.
