Koelhuis District Eindhoven is an ambitious urban renewal project on the new east city entrance, focused on Immersive Experiences, new media art, and contemporary culture, leveraging talent in the innovative Brainport region and building on Eindhoven’s reputation as the design and tech capital of the Netherlands.
The district is named after the monumental former freezer house, located opposite the redeveloped Campina factory now known as the mix-use neighborhood De Caai.
Once a forgotten building, it became a post-industrial icon of the city and was nominated as a municipal monument, giving a start for a new cultural district to emerge around it.
Known as “Brainport’s Immersive Experiences District,” Koelhuis District will function as a Living Lab— offering affordable housing and makerspaces, in combination with a large-scale culture and tech hub.
The cultural and tech hub at the heart of the district will focus on new media art, immersive technology, and contemporary culture, aiming to make complex themes more accessible to the public through (digital) immersive experiences.
The district will offer permanent and affordable living and working spaces for creative and technical talent, becoming a permanent incubator retaining talent in the city.
Koelhuis District Eindhoven is a concept by Concrete Culture, developed by Bakkers | Hommen.
Koelhuis District Eindhoven’s mission is to become a permanent incubator for creative and tech communities by offering affordable housing and makerspaces, as well as a large–scale culture and tech hub to experiment, work, and present. It aims to actively curate an inspiring program that makes complex topics accessible to different audiences as well as strengthen and contribute to the tech, arts, culture, and economic position of the province of North Brabant and The Netherlands as a whole.
By joining GCDN, Koelhuis District Eindhoven will create active connections within the network of cultural districts worldwide, reinforcing its position as a cultural and tech hub, connecting the Brainport region and the province of North Brabant with the rest of the world.
