The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is a cultural venue featuring screening, display and hospitality venues located close to the central business district of Canberra, Australia’s capital city. It is adjacent to the Australian National University campus and close to the National Museum of Australia and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. NFSA is developing a placemaking strategy that takes advantage of these potential connections, and positions its Art Deco building, courtyard and grounds as a cultural and creative hub for local citizens, and a place to discuss and experience audiovisual culture including artefacts from the Archive collection.
The NFSA is investing in placemaking strategies to grow profile and engagement and to promote cultural institutions as key community spaces for the discussion and discovery of issues of common interest including First Nations reconciliation and climate change. While we occupy a small multi-venue facility and not a precinct per se, our place-making ambitions seek to catalyse a variety of neighbouring interests including educational, cultural, commercial and residential.
The NFSA is seeking to meaningfully engage with a community of cultural districts which shares the same overarching ideals and operational environments. The NFSA is highly interested in the work of the GCDN and its members and is looking to learn from and contribute to an exchange of ideas in this forum.
