Better Bankside

About

Better Bankside is a Business Improvement District with culture at its core.

Established in 2000, Better Bankside works to improve the neighbourhood through a programme of place management, place marketing and place shaping strategies. Better Bankside has built a reputation for innovating, for connecting communities through inspiring urban realm activations and cultural experiences.

Bankside has been a place where people come to experience culture for over 1000 years. Outside the restrictions of the walled City of London, Bankside is London’s other side. Once a rowdy pleasure quarter, the district has always been a place where creativity has been allowed to thrive.

Home to some of the most visited and renowned London institutions; Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe and Borough Market. Bankside’s profile is ever-evolving yet culture remains at the forefront, evidenced in the art galleries, theatres, music venues and creative industries that are rooted there. But also in the streets of Bankside and the spaces between the buildings, an urban canvas for public realm animations from colourful crossings to pocket parks.

Currently, Better Bankside is working with partners to reimagine the mighty Victorian railway viaduct as the Low Line. An ambitious project, the Low Line will connect diverse communities and neighbouring areas by revealing and celebrating a unique heritage infrastructure to create new hubs of industry, creativity and entertainment along its course.

Better Bankside is funded and led by a partnership of over 700 local businesses that make up its membership. It exists to make Bankside a better place to live, work and visit.
