Quartier de la Création (SAMOA)

Nantes

About

The Creative District on the island of Nantes is an area of 30ha on the western point of the island which unites as many different actors, organizations and sectors of the creative and cultural industries as possible. Within a strong cultural public policy that has enormously boosted the image and attractiveness of the city of Nantes, the Creative District’s ambition is to become the showcase of the vibrant local culture.
- The district is designed as an urban laboratory in which new uses, functions and services can be prototyped and tested in public space.
- A pole of excellence in which spillover and transdisciplinary approaches are fostered.
- A sustainable district with 3 orientations: socially diverse, mixed functions and uses, and environmental quality.
All together the area will count over 5000 students, 100 researchers, 3000 jobs, and 90 000m2 of activities.

Since 2011 the SAMOA is responsible for the development and support of the creative and cultural industries in the metropolitan area. In order to do so an integrated economic development team works in the Creative Factory, a development agency which facilitates and coordinates the creative sectors in the area.

The Creative Factory has a comprehensive service offer: business support for entrepreneurs and start-ups; 11 000m2 of offices and workspace dedicated to the creative and cultural industries; support for experimentation and open-innovation in order to stimulate collaborations between traditional industries and start-ups in the cultural and creative sectors. In 2020 the team of the Creative Factory will move into part of the newly redeveloped Alstom Factory halls (25 000m2 of industrial warehouses), a third space in which the team will be able to offer a complete range of tools, services and spaces to stimulate the creativity of all local cultural and creative entrepreneurs and help their projects grow.

Reason for joining GCDN

The main reason for joining GCDN is to help our international network grow. Our different international collaborations (European projects, experimental project with the Quartier des Spectacles in Montreal, experience and knowledge exchange with Recife in Brazil) have taught us the benefits on a local level of sharing best practices, experiences, and skills when dealing with common priorities or issues. We hope to gain more insight on the topics that are on the agenda for the GCDN and meet other organizations working in the same fields.
